Anita Saarkessian

Anita Sarkeesian, a Canadian/American media critic and public speech writer. She created Feminist Frequency, a web site which features video and posts on the representations of women in popular media. Anita Sarkeesian is an award-winning Canadian-American feminist media critic and blogger. Feminist Frequency is a non-profit educational website which examines female representations within popular culture's narratives. Aiming to break down the stereotypes associated with women in popular culture, she is also working in highlighting issues relating to the targeted harassment of women, as well as the marginalized groups of the Internet space. Sarkeesian, who holds an MA in Political and Social Theory at York University, is also a highly sought after public presenter. She has presented speeches at the TEDxWomen festival as well as United Nations Broadband Working Group to Gender. Sarkeesian was fascinated by feminist issues, gender and gender equality since a young age. In 2009, when she was a student at a university, Sarkeesian founded the site Feminist Frequency. She was launching a series of online videos that examined the gender representations in video games when she became the victim of cyber-bullying. But the harassment did not deter her. It only strengthened her journalistic skills as a feminist. Her notable contributions to the feminist field were recognized by a variety of prizes. Anita Sarkeesian, a media journalist who has received numerous prizes and founded Feminist Frequency an educational non-profit company that examines the ways women are portrayed in popular culture narratives.
